nothing's happening [Nov. 17th, 2007|03:32 pm]
[my mood | blah]
[good music |Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan]

Homesickness is hitting me hard again. I can't even try to explain how much it sucks. So I won't. Moving on..

Last night I went to Olpe to meet my CR, Kathrin. Her and Anna (Marc's former hostsis who exchanged to America before) picked me up at the busbahnhof and we went to this place to have pizza. It was the nicest pizza place ever. It wasn't just pizza though, it was Italian food. You had to have reservations, the tables were all set, with 2 knives, one for bread and butter and the other for your meal. I used the wrong knife for my roll, so when my pizza came the waiter brought me another knife. It was strange to me that it was such a big deal that I use the "correct" knife. And yes, that means I did eat my pizza with a fork and knife. Kathrin and Anna had a lot of paperwork to do for PI; they had been conducting interviews for the German kids who want to go to America on the scholarship next year. But we talked, mostly in English, but some German thrown in, too. We were there for about an hour and a half while they finished their papers and then we took Anna home and me and Kathrin went to sit down some where to talk. We went to a sort of bar, where we both ordered ice tea, but they ended up kicking us out, no idea how they found out I wasn't 16. It was weird. So we went next door to an ice cream place and I got a Nutella crepe that was huge and not like normal crepes. But she filled out her form on me and we just chatted for a while about life and our exchanges. She's in university, wants to be a doctor. She exchanged a few years ago to Dallas, so we also talked about Texas football and I had to explain the rivalry between UT and A&M.

Oh, and Colleen and Marc both have new host families, not in Olpe. Cortnie has a new one too, not in Olpe, but sbout 30 minutes away I think so Kathrin is still her CR. I'm all alone now! Apparently several (at least 10, maybe more) kids are changing families.

Not a lot has been going on. I'm bored most of the time, which is bad for the homesickness. Ugh.. well next week is Thanksgiving and I'll be in Cologne with all the other Americans. Too bad it's only one night.

SNOW [Nov. 14th, 2007|05:57 pm]
[my mood | hungry]
[good music |Velvet - Captain Audio]

It stuck. Snowed yesterday and all through the night and this morning and all day everything was white! And it's snowing now again. Wish I had some pictures, it's so pretty. And so cold. Today we went shopping in Siegen after school where I got some winter Chuck knock-offs, a scarf, some gloves and a new belt.

School has been kind of stressful lately. There's a parent talk night next Monday and so all of a sudden everyone's paying attention to how much I'm doing (or not doing) at school. They're trying to force me to do PE. Bleh. But I did decide to put more of an effort into school and homework. I translated 2 whole pages of info for Physik because we have a test soon and I'm going to try to take it too. And I think we've moved onto a new subject in Math that I actually understand! We had a vocab quiz in Englisch the other day and I got a 5! That's almost the worst there is. Because I didn't know the German words, it was backwards for me. Whoops..

Ooh, something exciting happened. I got Harry Potter und der Orden des Phönix today. It came out in England 2 days ago but it doesn't come out in America until Dec. 11. It comes out here in Germany on Friday, but lucky me, I met a nice lady at a Schlecker who already got the shipment and had it in the back and let me by it early!! But I'm not supposed to say anything, so shhh... =D

And to round off this short entry, here is our class photo! I'm pleased to say that I successfully named everyone in it except for 4 girls (3 of them were named Laura). I'm pretty easy to pick out since I'm like the only one with color. XD Unfortunately, my friend Chris wasn't there that day, so he's not in the picture. Dickie is next to me on the right and Dana is second to last on the right, bottom row. And the lady standing on the left is our German teacher (I only have 2 women teachers).

exciting stuff! [Nov. 9th, 2007|04:21 pm]
[my mood | lazy]
[good music |My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade]

Yesterday I had two concerts in one day! Well, sorta. Dad went to Polyphonic Spree in Austin on Wednesday night, and he called me during it, but it was already Thursday morning here and I was in first period! It was funny when my phone rang, luckily we only had about 2 minutes of class left and then I called him back. I didn't realize he was at the show but he answered and I skipped out on PE to listen to the last 40 minutes of the Spree show over the phone. I was jumping around to Lithium in the empty locker room and everything. It completely made my day. Thanks Dad!

And last night was great! We got there at about 5:30 and only had to wait an hour to get in. Unfortunately, we were misinformed by one of the venue people who told us to stay in line even thought we didn't have tickets. So when we got to the front to go in, we told them we had won.. and luckily the people were nice enough to let us go in and then back out where there wasn't a line to go get our tickets. But then we almost didn't get back in through the same door, but we convinced the guy that we weren't going to wait again. By the time we checked our jackets in and had got to the stage, we were sort of close and in the middle. A while before the first band, Mindless Self Indulgence came on, everybody got packed in and we succefully moved up even more. I learned that it's still legal to smoke in public places in Germany, which sucks when the person next to you keeps lighting up. No clean air, bleh.

So the first band I actually enjoyed and I later found out that the bassist girl is married to Gerard Way. While I liked the music, the crowd was being a pain and it was uncomfortable. That's because I, like everyone else around me, had the goal of getting as close as possible. When they were done, I realized I didn't have my camera anymore somehow. That almost ruined my night. From that point on, I didn't stop worrying about it. I never did find it. Sorry Mom, Dad. I loved that camera, it was so perfect. My Chem on soon after and the crowd situation only got worse. I was really trying to enjoy myself though.. there was several tall guys around me and behind me that kept pushing so hard. I couldn't breathe, almost lost my glasses a couple times, definitely have some bruises, and my shoe came off. But hey, that's a My Chem show, isn't it? After a while, I decided to move back because I couldn't do anymore. It's so easy to move back, because everyone desperately wants to be in front of you anyway. I had completely lost Dana by then.

MCR played 18 songs total, I think, including Headfirst from Halos from IBYMBYBMYL. I would have had some amazing video footage, too.. When I moved back, I was so much more comfortable because I could once again feel air on my skin and I wasn't touching anyone. And I could see the whole stage. The only thing was that I ended up right next to the mosh pit. Which was kinda fun, I got to push people back in, but I often got rammed into very hard. It was all older guys in there, which was way to scary for me, so I didn't join. Anyways, having my own space, I was able to dance and jump and not stress about people around me. I was actually surprised that it's possible to enjoy a show from not the front. They played lots of good songs and it was awesome, except for my poor camera.

In other news....

It snowed today! Not the sticking kind, but still. We saw it out the windows in class and I got excited and everyone laughed and told me it was nothing. Crap, it's only November and this morning it was 3 Grad (38 degrees).

I put duct tape on my Chucks the other day because they're falling apart. But the concert had an effect and I can barely wear them now. I am now in the need of new Chucks!

I'm sorry this post isn't chockfull of nice pictures of Gerard Way and snow. *tear* RIP Sony Cybershot T50.

My Chemical Romance [Nov. 7th, 2007|02:24 pm]
[my mood | excited]
[good music |My Chemical Romance - Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge]

HERZLICHEN GLÜCKWUNSCH was the subject of the email. Which means CONGRATULATIONS. A few days ago, me and Dana decided we wanted to go see My Chemical Romance in Düsseldorf this Thursday. No one wanted to drive the hour and 15 minutes there and we couldn't find any trains that would work, so we gave up.. until Dana spotted a small contest on the homepage of Philipshalle, the venue. It said to email the correct answer to the question, Where did My Chemical Romance get their name? I knew the answer from the Life on the Murder Scene DVD and Dana translated my answer to German and we sent it in. Then again under Dori's and Dana's email addresses. And Dori said she would take us, but onyl if we won. They announced the winners yesterday. We were crossing out fingers and squeezing out thumbs (what Germans do for luck) all day at school and when I got home Dori said she hadn't gotten an email. And when I checked mine, I didn't have any either. We lost most hope, but held out a little that it might come later.. and right after lunch I checked again and there it was: HERZLICHEN GLÜCKWUNSCH.

We're totally stoked. Dana's only been to one concert before. My Chem hasn't been to Germany in 2 years and this is the only show they're playing here on their European tour. I'm really excited, but I kinda doubt that it could possibly be better than the only time I've ever seen them before. Because what could be better than front row with two of your favorite people on Earth and add in 2 setlists and a guitar pick (Taylor's) and meeting some really cool people? Yeah, that's gonna be hard. But it's still amazing that I won tickets and I get to go to a concert in Germany of one of my favorite bands.

My German Nachos Endeavor [Nov. 5th, 2007|04:01 pm]
[my mood | happy]
[good music |Stevie Ray Vaughan]

...was interesting. I went to the store on Saturday to get ingredients to make a pecan pie. But, I couldn't find pecans so I decided to do nachos. I found a little part of a shelf that had Old El Paso brand stuff.. enchiladas, salsa, jalepenos, etc. It was exciting. I picked up some guacamole mix, refried beans, tortilla chips, and jalepenos there and then found some cheddar (chester) cheese that was the yucky sandwich kind, some stuff that I was hoping was sour cream, and some advacados.

I set out to make my nachos last night after dinner. I started with the guac. Turns out, I don't know how to pick advacados, because mine weren't ripe enough. It took a while to get them out of the skin and get mashed up. But once I added the season stuff, it tasted loads better. Then I tried to melt some cheese in the microwave in a bowl. But it kept burning and wouldn't melt properly.. it didn't ever get to that liquid queso state. I set out my chips on a plate while the beans were warming up and once they were done, the beans went on first, then the cheese with salsa in it, then some guacamole, and I got out the stuff I thought was sour cream. And it wasn't. It was cream, but it wasn't sour. So I left that out and added the jalepenos and more salsa.

I took the plate out to Dori and Holger in the living room and we ate and it was gone in 5 minutes. Dana was scared to try it.. it did look kinda like sheiße.. and we didn't even bother telling Colin that I had made something because he never would have tried it. Dori and Holger liked it though, except for the refried beans, and the jalepenos were a little spicy for them. I was pretty proud of it. And I have more of everything that I'll use to try and make it better next time.

Yesterday Holger and I went to the Atta Höhle. Which is a cave. It was nice to get out and do something interesting, but when you've seen one cave, you've seen them all.

And now some exciting news.. My Chemical Romance is going to be in Düsseldorf (hour away) this Thursday. The venue is having a small contest for 3 people to win 2 tickets each to the show. You had to email them the answer to the question, Where did My Chem get their name? And since I know the answer and Dana can write in German, we entered. And since the contets is pretty casual, and that the answer to that question is stated in the English DVD, Life on the Murder Scene, I think we have pretty good chances. And up until today, even if we won the tickets, we wouldn't have any way to get there. But, Dana's mom gave in and said she'd take us if we win!!! YAY! So, wish us luck!

Halloween in Germany [Nov. 1st, 2007|12:13 pm]
[my mood | mellow]
[good music |Dirty Second Hands - Switchfoot]

This week wasn't too eventful. School is always better though because now I don't just sit in silence the whole time. It's getting easier to speak in German and stuff.

SO, yesterday was the last day of Oktober, meaning of course, Halloween, right? Well, for me, yes, but apparently for a part of the German population, no. School was completely normal except for me wearing orange and black, and I was prepared and not that disappointed that the occasion would be almost forgotten. But, Dana and Holger surprised me by really getting into the spirit of Halloween last night. It gets dark by like 5:30, so by then we already had everything set up for the possible couple of kids that would come trick-or-treating. Dana made a fake grave in the front yard with the traditional red cemetery candle, and Holger had made some wooden crosses, that said HORROR, and RIP. We set up the entry way with a string hooked to the door handle so that when pulled, the door would swing open. We pulled one of the big floor speakers from the living room into the doorway of the foyer and burned a CD with AC/DC's Hells Bells to play. We put the bowl of candy on the opposite wall from the door along with another red candle. I was going to play scary music on my violin, but instead I decided to sit in the corner of the foyer with a black hood so you couldn't see my face. We put the candy right next to me so the kids would actually have to walk in the house and come and get the candy out of the bowl. Dana and Holger were behind the door to the living room. Holger used the intercom thing to talk to the kids when they rang the door bell. He said in a scary voice, "Ich hab auf euch gewartet.." which means "I've been waiting for you.." and then Dana would pull the door open with the string and hit play on the stereo for the first 18 seconds of Hells Bells to play (ya know, the scary-ish gongs and bells..).

So that was our master plan to scare little children. We were all so into it, we sat there, ready for someone to come forEVER. At 6, we decided to eat dinner really quick, watching the windows the whole time, in case someone was coming. We were interrupted a couple times and I had to drop my Nutella bread and we all scrambled back into position, but both times were false alarms. When we were done and had waited some more, we seriously thought that no one was going to come. Colin went out at like 6ish with his friends as a vampire.

Finally, when we all had our noses pressed up against the front door, we saw some little kids coming and we got back into position and did the whole thing perfectly. The kids were probably like 7 though and they were so scared they wouldn't even come inside. They were standing at the open door staring at me, this dark, motionless figure in the corner.. and eventually Holger came out and turned on the light and gave them their candy.

The next time someone came, it was a HUGE group of like maybe 8 or 9 kids, from like 8-12 year olds. They were all really scared too because they wouldn't come in at first either. It took them a while to make someone go in first. Someone shined a flashlight in my face, too, and at first I just closed my eyes. So all the kids are at the door and no one wants to go in first and they're asking if they can turn the light on and stuff.. finally an older kid with a scream mask comes in first, and then some more follow him, and as soon as they reached down to take some candy, I screamed my horror scream. It was awesome. So the rest of the night went like that.. lots of waiting in between though.

When we were done at like 8:45, Dana decided to go to her friend's house in another town where some of her friends were spending the night. I decided to stay home and watch This Is Spinal Tap, and fell asleep after an hour of it, since I was really tired all day yesterday.

So, Halloween wasn't altogether disappointing. I got to scare a ton of little kids! And the best part is that we don't have school today, Nov. 1st, because of a religious holiday, Alle Heiligen, like El Dia de los Muertos.

lesson of the day.. [Oct. 25th, 2007|03:23 pm]
[my mood | good]
[good music |Switchfoot - This Is Your Life]

One word: TRY.

Here's the story. Usually (always) in Sport (P.E.) I don't participate. I figure since my name's not on the roll, I don't actually exist in that class, so it doesn't matter. But, today, I decided to dress out and pretend like I was participating. You see, right now, my class is doing the thing where you run and jump over this rope that's like a meter and a half off the ground and land on some big mats. And I can't do that. I know my limits and that is beyond them. So, I was sort of lurking at the back of the line and watching.. but Anna, one of Dana's friends noticed and made it her goal to get me to jump. I kept refusing, trying not to draw attention, but she kept coming back to me to try to make me do it. A couple other girls also tried persuading me. Then Anna tells Dana and the rest of her group that I'm not doing it so they all start nagging me! It was all friendly though, but I really didn't want to. They switched the technique of the jumping, and instead of going over the rope forward, you were supposed to like roll over it in the air. And no one could do it, and people kept falling off the mats and it was hilarious. So now they're argument was that no one could do it at all, and it wouldn't be embarrassing. Still I wouldn't jump. By now, others started noticing what was going on and Hucke, this guy made fun of me, making this face like I was scared to do it. So, that got me and then I got in line, at the front, behind a few girls. I was hoping that I could just jump without everyone watching, since there was 2 different ropes and 4 different lines, but noo, because then Chris saw me at the front of the line letting someone else go in front of me and from across the room, he was edging me on with his face. And I was standing there shaking my head, because now literally the whole class was watching me and waiting for me to go. And then Hucke, who was next to Chris gave me the L on the forehead and I glared at him right before I sprinted and launched myself over the rope. I don't think I actually cleared the rope like you're supposed to, but the whole class applauded me. I got up and bowed a couple times before going to sit on the bench.

So, yeah, it wasn't actually that bad. Lesson learned.

OH, and today I finally learned how to Waltz properly (I think). There's a dance class 7th and 8th periods on Thursdays that me and Dana go to. Most of my class goes, too, including like 8 or 9 guys. So far we've learned Cha-Cha-Cha, Salsa and Waltz. My partner is always the other exchange girl Barbara from Brazil, and today we finally got the hang of waltzing. We haven't been able to do it for the past like 3 classes. It's cool, we're not perfect yet, but hey..

(no subject) [Oct. 22nd, 2007|04:57 pm]
[my mood | okay]
[good music |MuggleCast]

Saturday night war voll cool. I'm so excited right now. I definitely can't go home now. So here's what happened..

I was kinda nervous on the way over to Moritz's house at like 8pm. I don't know why now. Dana and I arrived and Chris and Dickie were already there. His parents were on vacation. After a while, we started our game of Texas Hold 'Em and I was really glad that I spend all day reading up on how the game works so I wasn't completely lost. But I was still pretty bad. I only stayed in on one round, but it was the round that I won. Everyone was really impressed with my mad shuffling skills, which was funny.

We put the pizzas in the oven, and I guess Mösi forgot the timer, because a while after that, when we were in the middle of another round, he was like, "Sheiße, die Pizza!" And we all ran to the kitchen and when he was getting the pizzas out, he burned himself, which caused himself to drop the 2 ones he was holding on the floor, one of which was mine. We ate and sat and chatted and decided we were done with poker. They were talking in German and I think I caught a lot of what was being said. They would always translate for me though and ask me how a certain thing was in America and stuff. It was hilarious.. and singing. Singing German songs and translating bad words for me.

Later, we decided to watch American Pie: The Naked Mile. They even watched it in English for me and put on German subtitles. After the movie, we stayed sitting on the couch, we were all pretty tired, but we kept talking and singing and stuff, which was really entertaining.. They told me there's some stuff I have to learn before I go home, like German songs and words.. one is Schätzelein, which Momo (Mösi) says all the time. It's like "little treasure" or "honey" or "sweetie" or something that some famous German comedian always says.

That basically lasted for the rest of the night.. Mösi and Chris decided to go to bed at like 2:30, but me and Dana and Dickie stayed up and listened to music and talked more until I fell asleep at about 4:30 on the couch. When I woke up, the lights were off and I was alone. Dana and Dickie slept in Mösi's bed and Mösi and Chris were in another room. I didn't sleep very good.. I could barely breathe. At some point, Chris joined me in the living room and slept on the other couch.. I didn't realize until morning that I had had all the blankets.

This morning, Dickie and Chris left first, and me and Dana hung out with Mösi for a while.. He's read Harry Potter 7 already in English so we talked about that and he played some stuff on his guitar and I looked through his iTunes.. (he has 17,500 songs=freaking insane, but we have a lot of the same tastes.) When I got home, I wrote on Momo's wall on the GermanFacebook (called Shueler) and told him thanks and stuff and I had a really good time. And he replied back with this:

haay =)
ja war voll cool. Müssen wir nochmal machen
Bis morgen Schätzelein ;)
:x

Which means "Yeah it was totally cool. We have to do it again. See you tomorrow Schätzelein." With the little kissy emoticon. HEHE.

I'm so stoked. You know how you can only get so close to people when you only see them at school? Well, I feel like I've sealed my friendship with these guys. It was the first real bonding time and it was so important. I have real friends. Not just school aquaintances. YAY.

This morning it was 2 degrees!! Celsius, that is. Which is about 36 degrees F. Everything was frozen.. cars, grass, parts of the road.. ME! And today, I came home sick from school. I felt nauseus and had a headache and plus my asthma and allergies are still kinda bad. I was only there for like the first 15 minutes of Englisch. I didn't sleep like at all last night and I woke up feeling bad, but I wanted to tough it out to see my buddies. But on the bus, I realized I wasn't going to be able to last. Dori came and picked me up and I slept for a few hours.. I feel better but still have a little headache.

the german facebook [Oct. 19th, 2007|06:56 pm]
[my mood | cheerful]
[good music |Satisfaction - Rolling Stones]

It's called Shueler.cc and it's making me happy! When I asked if anyone here had MySpace or Facebook, Dana told me that they have another site that's for all German students. So, today I joined, and it's a LOT like Facebook. Not quite as nice, but many of the same features... I joined my class and set up my profile and stuff, and added most of the kids in my class to be my friend. And immediately I got a nice comment/wall post/whatever from my friend Chris! And then I deleted it. I was so mad, I didn't know "löschen" meant delete! But it was okay, because they just kept coming from other people. Everyone is so nice, it's making me feel so good. This website is awesome. It's communication without actually having to interact! Haha, I'm so terrible. No, but it's actually like breaking the ice without the awkwardness and stress of speaking correct German and thinking on the spot.

Talking about awkwardness, I've been using the Awkward Turtle a lot. I need to look up the word for awkward because no one gets it. They think it's funny though..

The other day I was sitting in the cafe and this guy was near me talking to someone else.. and I heard him say San Antonio. Of course, that got my attention and I looked up, and heard him ask the other peron if they knew it. They said no, and their conversation ended, but before they guy walked off, I said to him, "San Antonio?" And he sits down, and asks me if I know it! Turns out, he was an exchange student for 10 months last year. I told him I was here from Austin and asked him what he thought of San Antonio. He was like, "There's lotsa Mexicans. And black people." It wasn't in a bad way though, just an observation, since there are NO Mexicans in Deutschland. And very, very, very few black people. We talked for a few minutes, and I forgot to introduce myself properly before he had to leave, but he said hi to me in the hallway a couple days after, so I guess he remembers me. One thing I noticed about him was his strange accent (we spoke in English). It was a German guy speaking English with a slight Texican accent. Like, the funniest thing I've ever heard.

Dori and Holger are German bowling tonight and Dana is babysitting, so I have the house to myself. I'm thinking This Is Spinal Tap... tomorrow is my 6 week anniversary with the Jahns and almost 10 weeks in Deutschland!

about time [Oct. 18th, 2007|02:33 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]
[my mood | okay]
[good music |Woman - Wolfmother]

Since I got to Germany, I've been compiling a list of differences in my mind. I haven't written in down yet. This will be my first attempt to remember it all, which I don't know if I can do because in my head the list seems really long. But here goes.. (sorry, some of this will be a little redundant).

-About food..
- Germans don't put ice in their drinks. It's not warm, just very room temperature.
- ALL water is mineral water. Most water is carbonated. And everyone drinks it.
- Apple juice is carbonated. It's nasty.
- Bread is the most important food group. Bread (with marmalade, Nutella, cheese, honey, or whatever) is for breakfast, snack, and dinner. Except at dinner you can also have cold cuts of meat on your bread.
- Lunch is the biggest, hot meal of the day. We have pancakes a lot.
- So many things about school..
- You take public transportation to and from.
- Teachers don't have their own rooms.
- Classes are 40 or 45 minutes.
- Lunch isn't served at school.
- Schedule is different every day of the week.
- No school spirit. No shirts, sports teams, songs, pep rallys, dances.
- No dress code.
- They don't pledge to the flag or have announcements or anything like that.
- People get held back all the time. It's actually really common since Gymnasium is so hard, and it's not really looked down upon. And no one gets held back in elementary school.
- They separate everyone into 3 different schools after 4th grade depending on how smart they are.
- My school is 5th grade to 13th.
- Tests are half of your grade and are a really big deal because you only have a certain number.
- Grades are 1-6, not A-F. And it's virtually impossible to get a 1+.
- Drinking age is 16.
- Obviously some stuff about the language..
- There is no present progressive tense. (Saying "I read" is the same as saying "I'm reading".)
- There's 3 freaking genders.
- Declination. ( So freaking complex, I don't even try. Basically, all adjectives have endings depending on the gender and number of what your describing. And whether it's the nominative, accusative, dative, or genitive in the sentence.
- You can say "You're welcome" before the person says "Thanks."
- The first 2 or 3 letters in your license plate are the initials of your city.
- Public transportation is widely used and efficent. Including buses, trains, streetcars..
- Beds don't have those big comforters that actually cover the whole bed. And the pillows are bigger, and flatter. Which means you need like 3.
- Closets don't exist. They have wardrobes.
- Everyone I've asked has never heard of MySpace or Facebook.
- You don't see near as many German flags flying in Germany as you do American flags flying in America.
- Most of the girls dress in the same style. Skinny jeans, a sweater, and Puma-type shoes, all in shades of brown, black, and white.
- Most people have the same brand and style of backpack. Dakine.
- iPods are fairly rare, and if you do have one, it's no bigger than a Nano.
- TV shows come on at random times, like 10:05, or 5:40.
- Half of the stuff on TV is English dubbed in German.
- Cuss words are less offensive because they are said so often.
- Germans love techno.
- You wear clothes a lot more than once. Sometimes for a couple days in a row. (Not me.)
- Everything really is more expensive. The tax is outrageous. 19% on everything except food, and more on gas.
- In stores, the tax is included when you look to see how much something costs. It's nice.
- Germans are very environmental. Everyone recycles, carpools, takes shorter showers and not every day, and in general tries to use less energy.
- There's huge metal windmills EVERYWHERE. Especially where I was in Sachsen-Anhalt where it was totally flat. There were farms of them all over.
- Everyone really does think of fast food when they think of America.
- Harry Potter isn't as widespread and popular. (I think it's because you lose some of the magic in translation. And they don't have chapter pictures.)
- Most of the time, there's a huge perpetual cloud over like, all of Germany. The sky is white here, not blue.
- No Halloween. (Or Thanksgiving, duh.)
- No one really likes peanut butter.
- Going barefoot in the house really isn't an option. We have tile, and its cold. Plus, I would feel weird.
-Everyone uses ICQ.

That's all I can think of for now.. not too bad.

[good music |Here Comes The Sun - The Beatles]

Well, folks. It's happening. The dreaded homesickness. Except it's a bit more than just homesickness. Since I'm moving to New York, it sorta changes everything about this exchange. I'm struggling with the idea of going home right now. It's ugly.

On a happier note, I finally got my box from home (after 3 weeks). I got my violin, Harry Potter 7, Twilight, SPIN, 4 more pairs of jeans, a hoodie, and a blessed adaptor. Which means right now I'm actually on my own Mac. (And I amazingly have a fantastic internet connection, too, at the moment.) And today I got another package that was for backup. Another SPIN, an audio book, season 5 of That 70s Show, and This Is Spinal Tap. Thanks Mom and Dad! You have no idea how much this is helping me..

The other day I got invited out with some German friends! This Saturday night, we're (Theresa [Dickie], Moritz, [Mösi], Chris and me) are going to Mösi's house to play poker (Pokerabend) and watch Saw. Kinda excited. :)

So, the whole 10th grade is goint to Gerlos, which is in Austria, in January to go skiing for a week. And I can't got because of the PI seminar. Grrr. But before I knew that, I ordered myself a 33 Euro hoodie for the trip. They have our names on the front and GERLOS '08 on the back with a list of the whole class. We got them today! They're neat.

I JUST DID A HUGE PICTURE UPDATE. THE LAST 2 ENTRIES NOW HAVE PICTURES! GO SEE!

[good music |A Million Ways - OK GO]

Whew, where to begin.. Sorry it's been a while. Let's see if I can remember back to a week ago..

Two Friday afternoons ago, we (host dad, bro, and sis. Holger, Colin and Dana, respectively) drove down to Stuttgart. It was an uneventful ride, except for when Holger got his 20 year old Mercedes up to 200 kph (134 mph)on the Autobahn. We met my cousins (my mom's first cousin Mike, his wife Erin and 2 daughters Emma and Sophie) in front of the entrance to one of the American bases in Böblingen, a suburb of the city. From there, we went back to their house, where they had wireless internet (yesss) and American power adapters, both of which I took advantage of. They made me fajitas (stellar) and chocolate chip cookies. I had a glass of ice water, and, get this, couldn't even drink it. It was too cold, and hurt my teeth. 2 months here, and I'm already a wimp.. That night we also watched the first episode of the new Heroes via online pirating. It was awesome. I stayed up late (thanks to Emma, who gave me her room and bed for the weekend) and talked to Taylor.

Next morning we got up early to go to Sophie's soccer game. I didn't realize it until I heard the parents yelling, but it was all Americans there. There were TONS of them. Me and Emma talked through the whole game. I hadn't seen her in 5 years, but she's 14 and we have so much in common. She actually likes Hary Potter as much as I do and we have similar music tastes.

After the game, we headed to Strasbourg, France, which is about 2 hours away on the border of Germany and France. Strasbourg used to be part of Germany, so the architechture there is mixed, as is the language. But it was a nice city, the 7th biggest in France and capitol of the EU.

We ate at an outdoor cafe where I got the specialty menu item and it was good, but I have no idea what it was or what it was called.

Right after lunch, we had crepes (best thing everrrr). It was my first crepe, and addicted me for life, I'm sure. Banana and Nutella.

We walked around the city, visited the cathedral there.

I bought my host mom Dori some French chocolates for her birthday the following Friday. Me and Emma also stopped in a French music store and she picked a random French rock CD with a cool cover. I bought some postcards and took lots of pictures, but the highlight of my day was getting asked out by a cute Frenchman. Hehe. He was handing out pieces of paper and I was passing, so I took one. But when I grabbed it, he didn't let go, and then asked me something in French. My quizzical stare must have told him I wasn't French, because then he asked me if I spoke French. I said no, English. And he was like 'Oh, I love Americans!' and then he asked me in really broken English why I was there and I told him I was a foreign exchange student in Germany and he asked how many times I'd been to France (I think) and I said it was my first time and then he asked how long I would be there and when I said just today, he said 'Why don't we go get some drinks, me and you?' and he made a little hand sign for drinking. And I just smiled and said I couldn't and started to walk off. I never even actually got the flyer thing. It was so funny though.

Next day, we slept in and had chocolate chip banana pancakes for breakfast. Sometime in the early afternoon, Emma and Mike took me downtown Stuttgart via the train. We walked around, I got a nice little tour, and we stopped for an Eis.

Shortly after we got home, we all left for the Volksfest of Stuttgart, called Cannstatter Wasen.

First thing we did was ride the world's largest mobile Ferris Wheel to get a good view of the fest and decide which rides to ride, since, like everything here, it costs a fortune.

We spent the evening riding rides and eventually made it into one of the beer tents to eat. The beer tents are cool, there's like 7 of them and they're huge. We went to one that wasn't packed, but there was still live entertainment. People (including me and Emma at one point) were standing on the tables with biers in hand, singing, dancing, swaying, falling, drinking, it was hilarious. And the beer was good. ;)

We did this cool go cart racing later, where I totally owned. Started on the pole and finished first.

And me and Emma were gonna ride this insane upside down thing, but it was getting late, and we started heading out, stopping at another crepe stand on the way (I got mine with Snickers). I said goodbye to Mike, Emma and Sophie that night since they had work and school in the morning.

Erin took me to the Böblingen American base in the morning, where there's a big Target-type store with all American stuff and American prices. I got some new makeup, lotion, a Spin magazine, some junk food (Chip's Ahoy, Spicy Cheez-Its, some sour cream and onion chips, and a small package of Oreos. Hey people, I was desperate, it's been 2 months.) And Erin surprised me and payed for it since they don't even accept Euros, which she knew the whole time. In return, I bought lunch: Pizza Hut.

We met my host fam back out in front and I slept on the way home, except when we stopped at McDonalds. :)

And that was my awesome weekend in Stuttgart with the Paukens. Here's the other stuff that happened before yesterday when school started:

-Dori's 41st birthday. I gave her the chocolates and found out that birthday presents aren't mandatory. I think I was the only one that have her somehting.. She had a party that night, not starting until about 8. It was all adults, and some of them brought their kids, but they stayed upstairs with us in Dana's room. Going out of the room was awful, because they let everyone smoke in the house and the smell was BAD. I went to sleep at like 12, but not everyone left until 3.

-I found out that my family is moving to Rochester, NY in 2 months while I'm here. It was an awful couple of days. I almost decided to come home. Won't go into the ugly details..

And yesterday we went back to school. Which was a good change. I really needed to get out of the house and interact with people other than my family. I like the school situation. I get to be independent and leave school when I hve a free period and walk arond the city, and say, go to the bank if I need to. And today I had my first German "class" at the Grundewald's house (Marc, another CBer's family) with the other exchangers from my school, Andreas from Mexico, Barabara from Brazil, and a guy from China. It wasn't that bad. And I got to go home afterwards, even though it was only 12. I took the bus alone for the first time, and was proud that I got on the right one. :)

Köln [Sep. 26th, 2007|09:05 pm]

[good music |Cemetery Drive - MCR]

I wish we had a 2 week Autumn Break in Texas. Because it's awesome.

Sunday, the host fam took me to Biggesee, a nearby town that has a lake. It was such a gorgeous day. And we don't have too many of those here, so it was a treat. We drove up in the hills and vistited an old building that had a really nice view.

And then we walked around a lot, and finally went down to this public grassy area next to the water. It was soo pretty.

There wasn't that many people, so we just pulled up some grass and sat down. There were lots of sailboats and the sun was shining and there were NO clouds at all. We also walked back up to the little store and bought ice creams and went back down to sit and eat them in the sun. It was even warm enough for people to swim. Such a gorgeous day.

Yesterday, Tuesday, I went to Cologne (Köln) with Cortnie and Colleen. Colleen's host dad works there, so he took us on the Autobahn. He dropped us off and we took the subway (U-Bahn) into the city. First thing we did was visit the Dom, which is a HUGE gothic cathedral.

And I mean huge. Holy crap. We looked around and took pictures inside and then decided to climb to the top. It cost a Euro and was quite a climb. 509 steps to the top. And the thing was that they were all in a spiral staircase.

Heilige sheiße, it was really hard. My legs were seriously about to give out. But I made it to the very top and we took pictures and signed our names on a wall (every wall is completely covered in signatures) and decided where to go next.

After we came down, we went to the shopping district (called Hohe Straße, and it's all walking, no cars) and my legs were vibrating. Like hardcore shaking. I bought like 7 postcards and a pair of Peace earrings. The street was lined on both sides with stores, it was really neat. There was H&M (of course), Puma, lots of shoe and clothings stores, New Yorker, etc.

We kept walking because none of us really felt like clothes shopping, with an eventual goal of getting to Hard Rock Cafe to eat lunch. We found a Starbucks on the way there, which was excellent since I haven't had Starbucks in a while. I always get the Java Chip Chocolate frappacino, but here they had Banana Java Chip Chocolate frapp. and it was soooo good. Unfortunately, they wouldn't take my Starbucks giftcard, so I had to pay an outrageous €4,80. But it was worth it.

We found Hard Rock Cafe shortly after and had to wait a few minutes for it to open (at noon). Our waiter gave us English menus and when I ordered water, he asked, 'tap water with ice?' Ah, I was very happy with that. And I had a SOB Burger ofor a whopping €12,55. It was really good though. We stayed there after finished eating for like an hour talking. I think our waiter forgot about us. But we didn't mind because we were in no rush.

Then we made our way to the Haupbahnhof to meet Antonio, who was coming in from Düsseldorf to see us (another CBYXer).

So for another 2 hours we hung out with him and then at 5, we had to catch the U-Bahn back to where we started. We came back and me and Cortnie spent the night with Colleen. Her host mom had dinner out, so after eating, we hung out in Colleen's awesome attic apartment thing. She has the whole attic to herself, it's 2 rooms, with a sorta kitchen, a bathroom with shower, and a big bed and desk and wireless internet. She's so lucky.

This morning we got up late and after breakfast walked around Olpe in the light rain and had ice cream, and went to the grocery store. After lunch back home, my host dad came and Cortnie's mom and we had coffee and cake and didn't leave until like 5:30.

And I realized when I got home this evening and had dinner with my family, that I was glad to be home. I'm so happy here, and I missed it after only being away for 2 days. I really love my family.

Ahh, today was pretty good. School is getting better because I'm interacting more. Moritz walked into class today carrying an electric guitar case. I was like, 'great...'

So, today, we had German 2nd period, and I usually don't like that class because obviously, I don't understand anything, but I think the rest of the class doesn't like it, too, because it's the goof-off class. Today we had to get into groups of 4 and I don't even know what we were supposed to be doing, but I was with my buddies, Teresa, Moritz and Chris. Our desks are two person desks, so Chris and Teresa moved their desk to where it was facing me and Moritz's desk. Chris was looking up words in my dictionary and making me say them in German, and I had no idea what I was saying but they were all kinda hard so they all laughed after I said one. Turned out I was saying things like 'contraceptive' and stuff.

Moritz took out his guitar for a sec and I asked him if he was in a band and what kind of music they played. He said yeah and that his band plays rock, alternative, ska stuff. =D

I took my first test today in Diff, which is English Creative Writing/Drama. We had read the first 4 chapters of An Anatomy of Drama in English, and the test was 4 essay questions. I think I did good, I wrote 666 words. And that was more that anyone I talked to. Most of the class was not happy with their tests because it actually was a pretty difficult book if your first language isn't English. Lucky me.

After that we had Musik, and I've decided that I love this class. The teacher is really neat. So Moritz had brought his guitar for music class and I told the teacher that I played the violin, so she got out this nice, old violin that she said was her grandmother's, and gave it to me to play. But it hadn't been used in a long time because there was no rosin on the bow and it was way out of tune, and when I tried to tune it, some of the pegs wouldn't turn, and the D string came off. So, it was a schade, and I didn't get to play. But I told her that I would have my own violin after the break. Because the way we do it in Musik is anyone who can play something (which isn't a lot of people) can bring it and play it. We have music books and there are parts to an easy little song for a lot of different instruments. the girls in the class that play the piano play that, there is a 'glockenspiel' which is a little xylophone, someone brings their clarinet, and then the teacher passes out different little percussion instruments to anyone who wants to do it, and then the rest of us sing. The guys do this 'bum bum dump' little thing really deep to one melody and the girls sing this shubi-du-bap part to another melody and then we put it all together and it sounds pretty cool. I can't wait to play my violin in there.

After Musik, Dana had Latin, but I didn't so I left and went out to try and find the Deutsche Bank again. Today is was chilly and lightly raining. I had a good idea where the bank was because I knew it was across from the really tall church, so I used that to get there, and on my way, I ran into Cortnie again, and we walked together for a while, but she had to catch a bus home. So I made it to the bank and found the ATM machine, and when I tried to withdraw money, it said my card was not authorized. Bah.

So I walked around the city a little, trying to orient myself. I had almost an hour to kill. I went in some shops and then headed to the bus station to wait. It's nice to be independent and find everything myself. Anyways, when I got home and told Dori, my host mom that I couldn't withdraw money, she called the bank, and then I realized that it probably didn't work because my mom didn't sign the back of the card like you're supposed to.. Oops. Oh and I had mail when I got home! Some postcards from my party, thanks guys! Today I got Vince's, Kevin's, Grandpa's, and Rose's. It's so nice to get those. And I had a letter from the Grandparents, which is always really nice. Except they're the only ones who write to me!

Hey hey.

Saturday was nice, got to sleep in. For dinner, we went over to the neighbor's house for a BBQ and some other neighbors were there too. I think everyone was related. It was all little kids, but I read most of the time, and finished Catch Me If You Can. On Sunday morning, I went with Holger and Doris to a car event in Olpe. It was called the Olpe Oldtimeer Fahrt and since Holger loves cars, we went and saw all the really old cool cars for a few hours.

Today at school, my English teacher gave me the opportunity to talk to my class about my life in America. I told them about school and Round Rock and Austin and then they asked me questions. It was a really good experience, because I got to express myself freely in English and hopefully now my classmates understand my personality better since I can't really make it come across in German. They asked questions about Homecoming Week, the weather, school rules, distances in America, stereotypes (German and American), stuff like that, and I was really happy to answer them all. I mentioned Language Camp and that it was in Sachsen-Anhalt, and everyone cracked up. Apparently there are the same stereotypes and prejudices here too. My English teacher asked me where I wanted to go in Germany or Europe, and I said anywhere basically because I've never seen anything. And then I said Amsterdam and everyone laughed.

And after class, people were still asking questions, and one guy came and sat by me and talked to me about beer and drinking, it was funny. So, I only have 4 classes on Monday, and so during my 4th period free, I went to the library and got Alice in Wonderland and A Clockwork Orange, both of which I've been wanting to read. And then, I almost finished Alice in Wonderland in Chemie, which was after that. Dana had a 6th period and I didn't, so I set off to find the Deutsche Bank. I think I was almost there, but then I ran into Cortnie and Marc, who were on their way to my school for a German class. So I decided to go back with them, and when I turned around, Moritz and Chris were there, walking in the direction of the bank. And then I almost decided not to go back with Cortnie and Marc, but it was enough for me when Moritz said hi. The German class was ridiculously easy. The Mexican guy, the Brazilian girl, and the Chinese guy were there, too. I really regretted going, because it was insanely easy for me. But I'll have to go to the bank tomorrow.

Hey yall! Well, I'm here! Unfortunatelzy, my family doesn't have wireless, so I'm using their computer right now. I'm going to post everything that I've written for the past month so you can get caught up with me. Here we go.

15. August 2007

Well, I'm here in Germany! It's a sign of how busy I've been that this is the first opportunity that I've had to write.

So left my house on Monday morning at almost 6 AM, and my flight left at 7. Taylor and Jen had spent the night and we didn't sleep at all, but stayed up and watched the meteor shower on my roof. Jennifer came too, but she had to leave at 11:30. It was the first really difficult goodbye that caused pain. But it got worse when we left the house and I had to leave Mom and Bailey. The worst was at the airport though, in the security line with Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, and Taylor and Jen. God, it was awful.

Once I got on the plane, I didn't stop crying until after it took off, and I got my last look at Austin before I fell asleep. I was feeling depressed, but when I woke up 2 1/2 hours later, some of that had worn off. I also slept on most of the flight to DC and when I got to Dulles, I felt really pretty excited. I met up with Jennifer from AYUSA and Anh and Natasha, who were already there.

We sat in the same place in the International United Check-In for hours and steadily more people arrived. I made friends and talked to everyone the whole time. Finally we went through security and to our gate, even though we still had a few hours to wait. But by then almost everyone was there and we were all socializing and trying to get to know everyone else.

By 9:30 we were on the huge 777 plane ready to leave the country. I was sitting next to an American woman that travels a lot for her job. The plane nice, all seats had a TV on the back showing like 10 different movies on different channels and there were some XM stations to listen to, too. But after the first 10 minutes of Spiderman 3, I was asleep and stayed that way for almost all of the 8 hour flight. I missed dinner, but when I woke up for breakfast, I felt really sick.

Once we got off the plane in Frankfurt, we had a bit of an ordeal getting boarding passes, running all around the airport. But we got our passports stamped, went through yet another security line, and made it on time to our plane ( we boarded by walking up steps). This plane and flight was a lot shorter, only 45 minutes. I sat next to a German lady. I made my first mistake when I ordered my drink in German and accidentally got carbonated water, which is aparetnly mostly what they drink here.

Once in Hannover, we had a small meal at the airport ( I got to use Euros) and then took a charter bus to Hedersleben, here, for language camp. It was about 2 hours, in which I slept more. I sat with Brad.

We got here at about 6 yesterday and first got our room assignments. I'm in the only female triple room with Natasha and Brooke. Most have 1 or 2 to a room, but ours is big, so it's nice. We had dinner right after, which was served to us. We had steak, gravy, potatoes, and something purple and sauer that I didn't like. After dinner we had a meeting where we were told rules and our schedule and other official things. Then we had freetime until curfew, which is 10 for grounds, and 10.30 for rooms.

Last night I got my phone charged, put in the new SIM and activated it and called home right away. Then I called Taylor. And I let them know what was going on. After, I took a shower and went to bed soon after, around 11. I didn't go outside last night but my roomie Natasha did and got to talk to some German teens in the town. I didn't sleep terrible, but I woke up a few times and couldn't go back to sleep easily.

We got up at 7:30 and had breakfast at 8, which consisted of bread and jelly. We got sorted into our classes (2 beginner classes, an intermediate and an advanced. I'm intermediate.) and did some review of German. We also got a tour of Hedersleben. We walked to the small and only grocery store and I bought nasty German toothpaste and a notebook for class. We passed a Kindergarten and all the little kids waved and shouted "Hallo!" at us; it was so cute. There is also a youthclub here and a couple other smaller corner stores, a bank, post office and Biergarten, but mostly houses.

We came back and had more class, but lunch was right after. We had meat and fries, which I had to cut with a knife and eat with a fork, because that's how you eat in Germany. After lunch, we had a 2 1/2 hour break, and I went with a small group of people to explore the grounds. We found a creek and some horses.

Later, I went back out to town with another group and I bought a cold water bottle at the Supermarkt, again not realizing that it was 'mit Kolensäure', which is carbonation. Won't make that mistake again.

When we returned, it was time for the 3 hour afternoon lesson. It was all grammar and some vocabulary. Our teacher is Fanny, who is definitely the nicest of the 4 language teachers. She's 23 and from Berlin.

After dinner at 6, we watch the news in German at 7, followed by the day's announcements. Then it's freetime until curfew, and I think tonight a lot of people went back to town or are studying, but I'm up here in my room listening/watching German Fußball on TV. I also called home to give them an update. We get to use the internet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 8-10 here. It's really slow and there's only 10 computers for 50 kids.

So, I love Germany and it's still so surreal that I'm here. There's lots of things that I love about it, like that Germans are very eco-friendly and this country is very clean because of it. They're hardcore about recycling, too. However, there is something that I really don't like. The water. I've already had 3 unpleasant water experiences. And all the water is room temperature, too. German hate ice. I want some cold water that doesn't have bubbles. That is a surprisingly difficult concept here.

I'm really tired again, from jetlag, culture shock, and the exhaustion you get from trying to interpret a different language all day. Because all the teachers speak in German most of the time and they want us to speak as much German as possible. But it's hard, your mind has to be constantly active.

Oh, and I've been texting Dana because Mom gave her my cell number. She's going to call me on Saturday!

17. August 2007

The past two days haven't been too eventful... full of German mostly. Last night I went out in front of the abbey that we're staying in to talk to the local German teenagers. They all come and park their cars out front and play loud music and smoke and drink beer. Not a lot of us Americans go out and hang out with them because I guess it's difficult and everyone is sort of intimidated by them. But Natasha talks with them like every night so I went out there with her her. I didn't talk like at all, but it was a cool experience. They were trying to get us to drink and go off with them in their cars. And I just found out that the guys we were talking to were skinheads. Crazy. I didn't do anything stupid though, of course.

I've been trying to be social with the Americans, too. There are some people I talk to and others that I don't, and some people that I still don't know very well. I sit with different people at meals, but its getting harder because cliques are already forming. I'm trying to be friends with everybody. Last night, me and Natasha stayed up talking and she took a bunch of my music from iTunes because we have very similar music tastes. We stayed up kinda late, so I was exhausted today and took a nap on my lunch break. I've also been reading a lot. New Moon is finally getting good.

I don't feel like my German has progressed a lot yet but it's getting better. Last night, on a whim, I went to a supposed 'dance party' in one of the girls' rooms. There were 6 guys and 6 girls and some of were dancing to techno and rap and someone flciked the lights like a strobe. It was kinda fun, but I felt out of place. I wanted to have fun though.

The past days, we've had orientation with Beate, our program director, and she talked about German customs and program rules and stuff. I found out that now that were in Germany, under authority of PI, AYUSA's rules don't really apply anymore. We can travel alone, and we can smoke and drink, all as long as it's okay with your host parents. The bit about travelling alone is fantastic!

Marc, my friend, got placed in Olpe where my school is, and Colleen is there too, but we all go to different schools. And tonight I got to get on MySpace and Facebook briefly..

19. August 2007

It's really hard to remember what I did yesterday since I'm not writing every day. But here is what stood out..

Yesterday was Saturday, but unfortunately we still had to go to class. At some point, Dana called me. I talked to her for a little over 20 minutes all in English. I wish it could have been a German conversation, but I just don't know enough yet. She told me that I would be taking the train to Siegen from here with 3 other CB kids. That's on September 8th. Can't wait! She has a strong German accent, but sounded nice and spoke good English. She was as nervous as I was to be on the phone. I said hello to her mom and we talked about school and language camp and other small things. I was speaking more simple and slower English than usual. Taking to her made me feel nervous for the intense ned to learn German quickly. I don't want to disappoint anyone.

We had a scavenger hunt for the second part of the day all around Hedersleben. I was in a kickass group, with Antonio who is almost fluent in German, Chase and John, who are both fast runners, and other assorted cool people. The crappy part was that we were running, and I doubt that I could be more out of shape, and I was always behind when they were running. But this guy that I hadn't even met or talked to was waiting for me and being really nice and eventually introduced himself as Tyler. He asked about my TSM shirt and so we started talking about music and other stuff. Our group got back to the Kloster first, but when they announced the winners later, we had tied for 4th out of 6 groups. Whatever.

After dinner, I was in my room talking to Dad when 3 people came in requesting to use my phone. And then 2 people passing my door invited me to the rave that was gonna happen in AJs room. So I explained how to use the phone and then grabbed my stereo and went to the party. Lucky I did too, because I was the only one with an iPod dock. We danced to techno and rap and it was more fun because there were so many more people. Plus all the cool kids. It took a while for the straight guys to start dancing and some of them just watched, but the room was loud and hot and crowded.

This morning, Sunday morning, was great. Sundays are completely free. Breakfast is still at 8 and still required but you're free to go back to bed after that if you want. I did. And then I woke back up at 8:45 because of the church bells. So I decided to go to church in my sweats, bandana, and old Chucks. It was Catholic and in German but still an interesting experience. I'm glad I went.

After church, I read and slept in my room and took a shower, until it was time to go to the soccer (Fußball) match against the Germans, who kicked our asses. I didn't play but watched the first game. Then I got bored and walked back with some people and had tea and cake and chatted awhile until I decided to go study and do homework.

And that I did for hours. I was very productive and I think it will help me learn. After dinner, I did more of the same until news and announcements. Apparently there's been a hurricane in Mexico called Hurricane Dean. After that, my pattern continued and I read a lot. I'm on Eclipse now. People have found out that I have a working phone, so several of them have come to me asking to use it. So I decided to work my advantage and make a business out of it. I've let like 7 people use my phone and I've made a €6 profit so far, which is actually €21, since I didn't actually pay for th minutes. But people have been coming by all day, I've had guys sitting in my room talking to me and waiting to use the phone. It's nice. And AJ came by to borrow my stereo again. It's cool to have people knocking on my door looking for me or wanting to hang out. I've also made more friends recently, my personal circle if people I like is getting bigger.

It still feels like I've been here ages but its only been barely a week. Only 3 left. Weird. I try not to think of Mom and Dad and Taylor and Jen. To dwell would bring out some pain, but I'm totally fine. No homesickness yet.

Tomorrow is back to school. Sundays are definitely my favorite day.. I think I'm gaining weight. I can't tell by looking but judging on my food intake, I bet that the outlook is night gut. Time to get this under control.

2nd round...

20. August 2007

Today I woke up and felt a little sick and a lot tired. But I got over it. After class, we had lunch and something special for dessert. ICE CREAM! I had been craving ice cream, or anything cold really, so this was really good. We had Culture and Politik with Gerd in the courtyard, which was interesting and I learned a lot.

After dinner I was in my room reading since I had done most of my Hausaufgaben over the Mittag Pause. I heard voices out of my window so I went down and the entire population of Hedersleben teens were out there, but I am too much of a coward to go and talk to them. So I decided to try to break into the computer room since I was desperate for the internet. Lo and behold, the computer was actually already open. I checked MySpace and Facebook again. Hopefully tomorrow I can upload some pictures and check my email.

At like 9:45 my parents finally called. Dad finished Harry Potter and Mom refilled by phone minutes for me, I now have €45, so that should last a while. I have my little business going, charging everyone 40% of what they use. =)

24. August 2007

I can't believe it's been 3 days since I updated. I'll try to remember what's happened.

Wednesday after classes, dinner and news, we went to the youth club and some played indoor soccer against some Germans and the rest of us watched. When half of us left at 9, we came back to watch the big soccer match on TV between Germany and England. I took a shower first and Germany won 2-1. Wednesday was the first night they started making us actually to to bed at 10:30. We have to have the lights out and be in bed, and they're being really strict about it.

Tuesday I got to get online again and I uploaded some pictures from my camera to Photobucket, which took ages. I also read my emails from Taylor, who had been sending almost daily updates on her life. After I read them, I had to call her. We talked for about half an hour about stuff here and there. It was hard hanging up.

Thursday we went on a field trip. First was a glass manufacturing place. It took a while to get there and the bus was one seat short and I happened to be in the very back seat, where we had to squish in an extra person. But the glass place was neat. I bought a yellow glass ring for me and a blue one for Dana. We went on a short tour of the place and then some of got to blow our own glass for €10, so we had to wait around forever for that. I was the last one of 16 to go, but I thought it was pretty neat. I made a blue glass ball.

After a teeny sandwich, we left to go to Struebeck, another little town that was closer thins time. The town was a culture town; their thing was chess. Everything was about chess. They had a museum, a life-sized chessboard in the village square, and a pretty, old church. It started raining on our tour, so it was really humid after that.

When we left, we went to Halberstadt, a larger city where everyone was looking forward to going. We had a walking tour of old stuff in the city, which was interesting, but then we had free time and I went shipping with a group. We went to H&M, my new favorite store. I was tempted to buy tons of awesome stuff, but settled on a pair of black and grey dress shorts. Then we went to New Yorker, an edgier Rue 21, where I bought grey shirt with a pink '80s thing on it to go with my shorts.

It was a good day.

25. August 2007

Yesterday morning, we painted 3 big cylinder things in the town. The one I worked on had huge American and German flags, some peace signs, and a combination of the American and German seal, with both eagles on it. It looked pretty kickass.

We had class in the afternoon, but we met in the Aula and learned about German holidays.

Today we had our morning session in the Aula again, this time about the DDR. After lunch and break, in which I finally finished Eclipse, we were supposed to go to an alternative sportfest but it got cancelled, I guess because we had freetime instead. During my freetime, I walked to the store and bought Riesens and on my way back, ran into some guys and Natasha.

Tonight is the Talent Show. Me and Natasha are acting out A Strole in the Jungle. Should be funny. =)

27. August 2007

The talent show went great. I wore my tie-dye shirt with a bright yellow mesh tank top over it and my black skinny jeans rolled up and I was barefooted. Natasha wore tie-dye pants and a pink mesh tank top. We went almost last and it was great. I said the words along with the song and acted out as the narrator. Natasha was Pink Jelly. Everything was psychedelic and lots of people liked it.

Yesterday, Sunday, was free-day. I woke up for breakfast, but went back to sleep until before lunch. After lunch we studied a bit and then went for a 'hike' that was more of a walk. But it was nice. The weather was perfect. After cake and coffee at the youthclub, we played sports and chess at the playground of the elementary school. At 6, we had a BBQ at the youthclub. They eat hamburgers and hot dogs on white sandwich bread with only ketchup and mustard. And the patties were really think and that hot dogs were actually sausages.

After that, I called Taylor since it was the day before school starts at home. She said that no one has classes together this year. That really blows for them. She seemed depressed. And now since school is starting, I can't talk to her on weekdays anymore. I miss her. A freakin lot.

Last night I talked to James in my room for a while and finally got around to studying. I ended up doing my homework by iPod light under my covers after curfew.

This morning was mid-terms. I don't know how I did. Probably a C. Hopefully.

Anyway, we get to write letters to ourselves that we'll open next June after the program. Yay!

28. August 2007

Yesterday was the hardest day that I've been here. I called Taylor to leave her a message for the first day of school and I kinda got choked up and ended up crying a little. First day is almost the biggest deal of the year and it was weird missing it. And I miss Taylor like crazy. More than anyone or anything else so far. I miss having a best friend. I feel like the other half of me is missing.

I wrote that letter to myself.. it was 2 pages long. Full of expectations.

30. August 2007

Classes are getting so much better. Fanny is definitely the best teacher to have. And our class is the smallest. It's actually pretty fun now. Aside from when the grammar is just not making sense. But we always talk about random stuff and everyone is always laughing about something. I got a D on my midterm, which I was proud of. Fanny said I was best on the geography part.

I did my laundry on Tuesday. the washing machine is freaking tiny. I had to kick my clothes in to make them fit. And I didn't even do my whites, which is most of my underwear and socks. And there is no dryer here, so I brought it all back to my room and hung it on the curtain rod and opened the windows. It actually worked out well, and after only a day, most of my stuff was dry. During break, I went back to the supermarket and bought more chocolate, which is already gone today.

I accidentally missed the news on Tuesday night because I was reading Cool Gardens trying to decide which ones to read for the next talent show. Oops. Kristin made me write 20 sentences. I got online, and since I waited like 45 minutes to get on, I got to stay on for a nice long time. I checked the emails from Taylor first. They started school, and I'd been dying to hear about the first day, so I was really glad to read about that. And I actually replied so tonight I should have a response.

Yesterday I got my winter luggage out of the storage room and brought it up to my room. I don't think its technically allowed, but a few other girls did, too. Anyways, it's been really cold (well, pretty chilly anyway) lately and we all need some jackets and long sleeves. I love the weather. It's always hovering between warm and chilly, like just when it's a bit cold, the clouds will move apart and the sun will warm you up. But the coldness is actually a beautiful thing. I'm not complaining at all.

We had afternoon lessons cut short so that we could go to another BBQ that the mayor of Hedersleben had for us at the youthclub (the mayor organizes all of our events) with the German teens. Only like 4 or 5 German kids came though, the ones that we usually hang out with: Melissa, Patrick, Sasha, and I can't remember the other guy's name. Patrick and Sasha are really sexy though. So the BBQ sucked because I had to wait like an 1 1/2 for a freakin' hamburger. The grill fire wasn't got enough and I was starving by the time I ate.

Anyways.. we're all ready to get out of language camp. 8 days until we go to our host fams. It's so routine here that it gets boring really easily. And now that I don't have a book to read.. but this Sunday we're going to Quedlinburg. Outings are fun as long as we get free time. And next Wednesday, we're going to Leipzig, which will be cool because that's a pretty big city.

31. August 2007

Can't really believe August is over. And everyone has been in school for a week already. This week went by pretty quickly, and now we only have one left!

Last night after dinner, me and Alondra went to the NP to get some hot chocolate because it was cold and we wanted to watch Little Miss Sunshine. Shannon went with us, but when we got back, we had the news and then we went to the computer room, and we ended up staying there for a long time, so we're gonna watch the movie another day. Michelle and Chris have my website up! It looks really good, too. It's all in German colors and has my blog. It's very nice. I can't wait to tell them how much it rocks.

Last night was a hot night for my business. Everyone wanted to use the phone, I made almost €10 I think. It wasn't actually that much, but everyone overpays me. I had so many people in my room, and it was great because everyone is so excited to finally get to talk to their parents or boyfriends or whatever. They feel like they owe me their life, but I'm just happy to be able to make them happy.

Today for lunch, they gave us this SICK fishy shit. It was just disgusting. Everyone hated it. I barely forced myself to taste it. It was cold, raw fish in a mayonnaise-y sauce. Bleh.

Today for our afternoon lesson, we went to the NP to get stuff to make pancakes and cookies tomorrow. Class is really fun now. We have the most random and crazy conversations, all somehow pertaining to German/Germany. Fanny is just the coolest. We all cuss all the time, too, and Shannon brings up such weird topics.

Anyways... I got a postcard the other day from my CR. She seems really nice. But today I got a postcard from home! It was the one from Taylor. I love having it. I want to send my CR and my host family a postcard, but they don't have any domestic stamps for us here..

1. September 2007

Holy crap, it's September. And it's freezing here. Last night at 7 when we went down to the news, they told us that the people that signed up to go do the Fire Brigade thing were leaving right then. And, I had signed up, along with most of the people that I like here. I already had on my Spree jacket, but I added my pea coat and the green scarf I knitted last summer because it was raining a bit and it was cold.

We walked over to the fire house (it's around the block) and they showed us around and told us about what they do. Every year they have a big party to get everyone excited and interested in the Fire Brigade, I guess. They had posters up of each year's party, and they were all really.. bad. There was strippers and crazy stuff. We also got to see the fire trucks. Keep in mind that none of this is like American fire stations. It's a small village fire brigade, the trucks are smaller and less shiny, it's all volunteer, and everything seemed less official than it is in the states. Anyways, a couple of us got to hold the hose when they had water shooting out of it. I got to, but I had forgotten my camera, which really makes me mad because the whole night was full of amazing picture opportunities. Then we got to use the jaws of life, and I kept the piece of steel that I cut. They also showed us the foam stuff that they can make come out of the hose. It was this huge, white puffy stuff. It was awesome.

There were 2 fire trucks, one bigger and newer, and a van. The group I was in got to ride in the big fire truck on the first trip. It was me, Van, Natalie, Johnny, Anh, Colleen, and Shannon. They put on the sirens and lights and we all drove to the next village, because here they have like a group of Fire Brigades that help each other out. At the other one, they showed us around and we got to take pictures in and on the truck. Then, we got back in the trucks, this time we were in the smaller one, and drove to the next village and did the same thing. On the way back from that one, we were going to ride in the van, but it was already full, so we got back in the big fire truck. We sang Stacy's Mom really loud and our fireman put us on the radio. When we got back to the Hedersleben fire station, they gave us hot dogs on white bread. We ate and talked and then they let us put on their uniforms and helmets and stuff and we took pictures. It was a really good time, I hung out with Antonio and Solrun, who are 'together' now, but they both flirt with me and everyone else. And supposedly we're getting married. Yes, all 3 of us. It's.. funny. I don't know how else to describe that whole situation.

But, we didn't get back to the Kloster until 10:30, which is curfew, so we had some extra time last night. Brooke let me borrow Pride and Prejudice, that she was borrowing from Colleen to rip onto my computer. After we finally turned the lights out, me, Natasha and Brooke stayed up for a few hours talking and gossiping. Ha. It was great. We listed all the people that annoy the shit out of us. And talking about our lives and stuff like that. It was nice, since I don't get to do that with my friends very often.

This morning, for our morning lesson, we got to cook! My group made German pancakes, and the other groups did apple cinnamon pancakes and cookies. I did most of the work for my group, and the pancakes turned out good. Actually, ours was the best. We put Nutella and powdered sugar on it. Yum. We were in the kitchen all morning though, and we had a good time cooking and hanging out. Fanny's parents came at the end, and we got to meet them.

Tim delivered two postcards to me. Both from home, one from Grandma and the other from Frau Bookert. I taped them all to my wall under my shelf next to my bed.. looks nice.

And now I think I will sleep and take a shower. Maybe I'll go visit with people, or maybe I'll watch a movie..

2. September 2007

Yesterday I ended up going downstairs after a while and I hung out with Anh, Mikah and AJ. We had tea together and we eventually decided to watch Little Miss Sunshine on my laptop. We used my laptop and Anh's speakers and Johnny, Gurdeep, Alex, and some others watched it with us in the couch room. I love that movie...

After dinner I stayed in my room waiting to get another phone call, since I missed them during the news. Eventually I called my house and told them to call me back. But Mom and Dad weren't there, so I talked to Grandma and Grandpa for an hour. Apparently my parents went to New York. Dad surprised Mom for their anniversary and they picked up and went to New York. They're in Rochester right now and they're gonna see Kathleen and go to Niagara Falls and eventually New York City, too.

After I talked to them, Mom called me from the Hyatt. Talked to them for about a half hour and then I called Taylor, but no one was home and then Jen, but only for like 3 minutes since I'm almost out of minutes, but she was in an aquarium in Dallas and she said she'd call me soon.

Today we're going to Quedlinburg at 2. But I'm pissed because in Germany, everything is closed on Sundays and we won't be able to shop at all. And I'm in desperate need of replenishing the euros on my SIM. I have like €1.50. So I was excited for today, but now it's going to suck because we probably won't have any free time. GAY.

3. September 2007

Yesterday after breakfast, I slept until lunch and then, since lunch was gross again, me and Carah went to the bank and then the Biergarten. I ordered some fries, which were really good, and there were already some other kids up there, so we hung out until like 1:20.

Anyways, we went about 10 km to Quedlinburg. Quedlinburg is a small, very old city. All the buildings look completely German and it was very quaint. We had a guided tour and then an hour to do what we wanted. Everything was closed though, so I didn't get my phone card or any postcards. I did have some Eisschokolade with Carah and Natasha though.

After we got back from Quedlinburg, and after dinner, we had to watch a movie in German and I fell asleep. And.. yeah it was boring and after, I went to bed.

Before class today, I went to the K&K down the road by myself to get some postcards and a phone card. It was raining, of course. Anyway, I had to ask for the phone card, but they didn't have the brand I needed, and then I asked for postcards (auf Deutsch, of course) and they gave me 5 that had aerial views of Hedersleben for free. This morning in class was crazy hard. I hate German grammar. It is hell. During break, I did my homework with Shannon, Natasha, and Carah, and then we went to the NP. Half the kids were either coming back, there already, or walking there. I bought M&Ms, baked pitas, gummy bears, and a Twix. When we got back, I had tea with Shannon and Lee before class.

For the afternoon culture class, Fanny played a lot of German music for us, and we looked at the lyrics and figured out what they were saying. After dinner, I decided to take up Cortnie on her offer to use her credit card to refill my phone. Unfortunately, while I was on the phone doing it, I ran out of minutes and the call was disconnected. But, right after that, Cortnie's mom called my phone to talk to her and she ended up doing it for us. So now I have €30. We watched another movie after the news, but this time is was an actual German movie, so it wasn't dubbed but it didn't have subtitles either. It was about a bunch of kids in Leipzig. I didn't really understand it, but I still enjoyed it.

4. September 2007

Today during break I wrote 3 postcards. One to my host family, one to my CR, and one to home. I wrote drafts in English, then translated them to German. I was quite proud of myself. The one to home has the English translation below it.

For our afternoon class today, we had Gerd talk to us about school in Germany. It was the most interesting this so far, because it directly concerned us. I've decided that I'm really glad that I got put in 11th grade because it's definitely better than 10th. You can leave campus, you get to move around for your classes, and you have more freedom in general.

Tonight we're going bowling, and tomorrow is Leipzig! We're leaving at 8:30 and not getting back until 6:30. First we're going to the American consulate, which should be really cool, and then a museum and a couple churches, and then free time. There is a McDonalds there, so I intend on eating a cheeseburger and fries and having an ice water.

Thursday is finals, and Friday we have class in the morning one last time and then we pack in the afternoon. Almost all of us are going to Magdeburg on Saturday morning to take trains to our families. And that will be the end of language camp!

6. September 2007

Yesterday in Leipzig was sehr gut. Breakfast was served from 7:30 to 8:30 so that we could leave at 8:30. So everyone got up early to be at breakfast at 7:30, except for me, who slept in and ate at 8 by myself. We had a nice bus this time, and I sat with Shannon for the 2 hour ride into Sachsen. We listened to my iPod and he fell asleep.

First we went to the American consulate, where we couldn't bring anything inside, but we had to have our passports. The consulate general there talked to us about the foreign service and Germany, and we got to ask questions. It was actually really interesting, especially for me.

When we left, it was a bit past 12, but we had to go to a museum before we could eat. The museum was about the DDR, and it was a really good exhibit, but my tour was in German. We wore little headphone things to hear the guide. Then we walked around the corner to a really big, old church and went in to take pictures and stuff. But we could leave when we wanted in groups of at least 4 and do whatever we fancied for almost 2 hours. I got a text from Dana that said (in German) how excited they were, and they got my postcard and that her Dad won't be there to pick me up on Saturday, but the other 3 will.

My group of Natasha, Carah, Shannon, Lee and me went to find a McDonalds and we walked back to where the bus was, at the Haptbahnhof, which is the big train station with a mall inside. I think we were the only group who went there. But we ate at McDonalds with the money the program gave us. We all got Big Macs and fries. And I had ice water. It was fantastic. And I felt strangely very full after that. So then me and Natasha dragged everyone into a couple of chick stores where we didn't find anything. Then I wanted ice cream so we stopped and I got a scoop of chocolate. Then we decided to get out of the bahnhof, so we walked around outside for a few blocks, but didn't find anything else interesting to see or do, so went all the way back to the bahnhof to use a restroom. We found one in a Subway, but you had to pay a Euro to open the door. So we payed once and took turns using it, never closing the door. We had a few minutes after that before we had to be back at the bus, so we went to a magazine store. I looked for a German hairstyle magazine, but I couldn't find any, which I think is strange.

When we got to the bus, a ton of people had H&M bags. But I was glad that I didn't spend hardly any money. I fell asleep listening to music on the way back. We had dinner and then watched the news and finally had some free time before bed, Today hasn't been interesting yet.. we reviewed this morning for the final that is this afternoon. Speaking of which, I should go study.

10. September 2007

Wow! There is so much to write about! I haven't been able to write in the most important days. The last two days of language camp and the first two days with my family. Ay. Where to begin..

On the last day, we went over the First Night Questions in the morning and packed in the afternoon. And we went to the Biergarten one last time. There was a whole stupid drama with Brooke because me and Natasha were talking about her the night before in German when we thought she was sleeping. Anyways, at 5:30, we all went to take down the CBYX flag in front of the Jungendclub and then back at the Kloster while we were waiting for the big dinner, we had a huge photo shoot with everyone. And then we ate a nice last meal and had the talent show right after. I read some Serj Tankian, which was well received. They extended curfew to 11:30 and I talked to Mom on the phone.

Saturday morning everyone finished packing and 40 of us went to Magdeburg on the bus. We all had a travel buddy; mine was Cortnie, but I was also with Marc and Colleen. Natasha was the only one on her train, and it left after everyone else's. So, it was insane trying to get all of our luggage on the train and get to our seats and everything. So Natasha helped me get all mine on, but she couldn't get off the train before it left, so it left with her on it, going the wrong direction. She freaked out, out, of course. Luckily, almost all the rest of us were on that train, too, as was Fanny. So Fanny got it all sorted out and Natasha got to where she was supposed to be.

The train ride was long, the first leg was 4 hours. Steadily, everyone got off at different places.. Carah helped me, Cortnie, Marc and Colleen get our luggage off the train in Hagen, where we switched trains. Marc's family also picked him up there, so they helped us get to our next platform and helped with luggage. It was fantastic. So, me, Cortnie and Colleen got on the train to Siegen, and the ride was an hour and half.

In Siegen, Doris, Dana and Colin picked me up, and Kathrin was there too, our CR. Right after, we went to McDonalds because Colin loves it. I was pretty quiet because I didn't want to speak in English, but couldn't say much in German. But they were very nice and we were getting along well.

After unpacking, that evening, I asked the First Night Questions, and they said I don't have any chores, which is nice. Went to sleep in my own nice comfy rollout bed and actually got to sleep in on Sunday morning for the first time in 4 weeks.

After breakfast and meeting Holger, who is very, very nice, Dana, Holger, and I went on a walk around Hünsborn. They call it a calf, because there is a city, then a town, then a calf. It's pretty small, but quite quaint. And it's hilly here and you can get great views of the surrounding trees and hills.

So I was really nervous for the first day of school today. Doris took us, and they ended up putting me in a 10th grade class with Dana instead of 11th. Which is actually really good, because it's all the same people in your classes. And you stay in the same room most of the time and the teachers come and go, except for physics, music, and chemistry, which are in different rooms and/or buildings. So I went to Dana's class, 10A, and the only open seat was next t the teacher's desk at the end of the row of all the guys in the class. So I sat there, and the guy I sit with is Moritz and then Chris is across from me. They were both really nice and offered to help me when I was trying to translate a science worksheet during math. English was the first class, which was nice. I didn't do much. during 4th period, I had a break because Dana had Latin, and so I sat in the cafeteria, where Mr. Lenz found me and gave me a schedule and asked me what classes I wanted. I told him that I would like to be in a Spanish class, which will be with 11th graders.

After 4th period, I was supposed to have my photo taken for my ID, but Chris found me and I walked with him to Chemistry instead. He spoke to me in English, since he speaks it pretty well. I made Dana and her friends late to Chemie because they were looking for me, I felt bad. After Chemie was another block period, and they told me I didn't have to go to Religion, so I went to the cafeteria again and sat with Chris and Moritz and another guy and listened to music. They looked at my iPod and liked my stuff on there.

So school ends at 12:45 for us, so after that I met Dana and we walked a way to the bus stop. The bus that you take home is actually a city bus packed with kids. Little kids and older ones up to about 16. Standing room only. The bus ride is long, too. By the time we got home, it was almost 1:45 already. But Doris had lunch ready and we all sat in the kitchen and ate and then did homework. I did the English and Dana did German.

Dinner is bread here. With Nutella (amazing chocolate hazelnut spread), cheese, butter, jelly, whatever you want. I like it. And we always have a dessert too.

12. September 2007

It's only been 4 days since I've been here, but I'm understanding more and more every day. I think I can effectively communicate what I need to say. I still sometimes have to say things in English though.

Yesterday I found out that 4 of my 10 classes are taught in English because I'm in the class of the advanced English speakers. It's good and bad. Good because I will be able to understand the lessons and have good grades, but bad because I won't learn German as quickly. Politics, History, English Creative Writing/Drama, and English are all taught in English. So during the first break, I had my photo taken and during the second break, they gave me my ID. And I introduced myself to the other exchange students. Two girls, one from Brazil and one from Mexico. They both spoke only a little English, but they Mexican girl spoke good German. We sat and talked during 6th period in 4 different languages. They said that they've both been having problems with their families and with school.

After school, me, Dana, and Doris went to Siegen to go shopping. I needed a coat and winter shoes. I got a coat at H&M and a hoodie and headband, and I got some sweet shoes in the mall. They're like high-top Converse that are waterproof and furry on the inside. They also told me last night that we would go to Cologne during the break that we have in a week in a half. I'm so excited! We're just gonna go to shop, it'll be great.

ein Woche hier [Aug. 20th, 2007|08:55 pm]
[location |Hederleben, Germany]

I've been here almost a week, and this place is great. We did a scavenger hunt the other day, and had a soccer tournament against the Germans. We lost. On Thursday, we're going on a field trip! Yay!! I like this town, but its rather small. I went to a German Catholic church service that is right next to our abbey yesterday. It was interesting..
